City Council to discuss Gold’s Building renovations

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — For almost 96 years the Gold’s building has stood downtown. Now more than 180 new apartments are being planned to fill its top floors, making it one of Lincoln’s biggest apartment projects downtown.
The City is reviewing plans to renovate the upper floors, making mostly one-bedroom units and some studios and two-bedroom units.
Plans for the first floor are to use it for business and office space.
“The Gold’s building is a building that’s probably been in decline in one way or another for about a number of years,” said Dan Marvin, city urban development director.
“We’re really excited about a developer coming in and putting in over 25 million dollars in the building to rehabilitate it.”
He says this is a good plan as foot traffickers mostly visit the first floor.
“Old-time Lincolnites might remember Ms. B’s which was a grocery store that ran along N street,” said Marvin.
“The Gold’s building which was Nathan’s Gold was the downtown department store and that was the multistory building that runs along O Street.”
In 2019, the Gold’s building was to be made into a hotel, but after the pandemic, the owners agreed to sell, saying a residential complex would make more sense. Marvin says everyone could benefit as the plans are to update the inside and outside of the building as well.
A public hearing will be held at the city council meeting on Monday at 5:30 pm.
