City of Lincoln announces 154-acre land acquisition for new northwest park

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The City of Lincoln announced on Thursday the acquisition of land for Cornhusker Bank Park on the northwest side of town.
The 154-acre plot located at 14th Street and Arbor Road was purchased for $3 million in February and will include the following:
- 85 acres for wetland/floodplain conservation
- 58 acres for active park use
- 11 acres for the future home of Lower Platte South Natural Resources District main offices.
“Thanks to the generous support of our public and private partners, Cornhusker Bank Park will enhance the natural environment and quality of life for our friends and neighbors in northwest Lincoln and for everyone in our community for generations to come,” Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird said in a press release. “This new park will add to the green tapestry of Lincoln’s parks and advance our goal to become the quality-of-life capital of the country.”
Over the next year, city officials will work with the community to pick amenities and features for the park.
The parks department is developing a plan and expects the completion of an initial layout that will include trails and a parking lot by the end of 2025.
“This park will be a gem for northwest Lincoln and our entire community,” said City Councilman Bennie Shobe in the release. “On this very parcel of land, families, individuals and children will create memories that will last them a lifetime.”
