City of Lincoln extends 84th Street closure

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The city said Thursday that a major Lincoln roadway will be closed for weeks longer than expected.

The closure of 84th Street between Van Dorn and O streets has been extended through Aug. 26, according to the Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department.

That includes the intersection of 84th and A streets, where construction was originally scheduled to finish on Friday.

LTU said crews have to finish concrete work in the intersection before it can safely open.

“Lincoln Transportation and Utilities appreciates the public’s patience during these closures and reminds residents that project dates are subject to change due to weather and unforeseen circumstances,” the department said in a press release.

Access to homes and businesses in the area will be maintained.

Drivers are encouraged to take O Street to 70th Street and Van Dorn to 70th or 112th streets.

The announcement comes days before the start of classes for Lincoln Public Schools students.

Some drivers said it will complicate their commute and worried about the detour causing increased traffic in school zones.

A user of the NOW Local News App called the delay a “disaster.”

“I have two kids going to two separate schools that I need to take 84th Street to get to, right in the area that it’s closed,” she said. “There are three schools actually directly nearby. So yeah, it’s going to mess with things.”
