Beatrice prepares for possible heavy snow

BEATRICE, Neb. (KLKN) – The City of Beatrice declared a “snow emergency” on Friday ahead of a weekend winter storm.

In a post on Facebook, the city said the alert will be in effect from 5 p.m. on Saturday through 8 a.m. on Monday.

During that time, it will be unlawful to park along snow emergency routes.

With the first winter storm of the season on its way, officials are putting plans in place to keep people safe and roads clear.

“Our crews are out there getting prepared,” City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer said. “First thing they’re doing is making sure all their equipment is up and ready to run snow blades on.”

He also said wind may be the biggest challenge crews will face.

“We know that may continue to blow some snow around and cause some drifting in certain areas, so we know that may be an issue we kind of have to work through over the next couple of nights,” Tempelmeyer said.

The city said it’s prepared because it’s been looking at specific roads for months now.

“Every July, our city council sits down and looks at our snow emergency routes and determines which ones need to be removed, or added or kind of changed,” Tempelmeyer said.

Tempelmeyer said the people of Beatrice can help crews in one simple way.

“The best thing that residents can do to help us is by moving vehicles off of the street,” he said.

That means parking on snow emergency routes will be prohibited from midnight to 7 a.m.

Winter crews will prioritize clearing emergency and priority routes before reaching residential streets, according to officials.

A map of snow emergency routes can be found on the City of Beatrice’s website.

Some people who live in Beatrice said that they haven’t started prepping for the snow yet and that they’ll believe it when they see it.
