City provides update after severe thunderstorm rips through Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department detailed some of the damage following a severe thunderstorm that ripped through the Capital City early Saturday morning.

UPDATE (4 p.m.): According to LTU, there are less than 20 traffic lights affected by the storm.

Those lights are flashing yellow, flashing red or are dark due to remaining power outages in the area.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE (8:17 a.m.): According to the department, 69 traffic signals have been affected by the storm.

The signals are flashing yellow, flashing red, or are dark due to several power outages in the area.

LTU said it is currently evaluating locations and time estimates for traffic signals to be restored.

Lincoln Parks and Recreation is also evaluating potential tree damage and is currently coordinating cleanup efforts.

According to the Lincoln Electric System outage map, just over 32,000 customers were without power due to the storm.

As of 3 p.m., just under 11,000 customers are still affected.

The Norris Public Power District is also dealing with several outages, as its outage map shows just over 4,700 customers without power.

As of 10 a.m., the Nebraska Public Power District is reporting just over 140 outages.

Gov. Jim Pillen released a statement on Facebook saying Nebraska’s “extremely capable” local responders and utility teams have the situation well in hand.
