Cloudy, windy before severe potential across Nebraska Tuesday night

Tuesday is expected to be cloudy and windy. Temperatures in the morning will be hovering around 40° for a low, before only warming to the lower 60s for a high in the afternoon.

Stronger winds develop later this morning, lasting through Tuesday evening. There is a Wind Advisory for parts of eastern Nebraska starting at 11 a.m. Tuesday through Tuesday evening for wind gusts approaching 45-50 mph.

As for the rest of the state, stronger wind gusts will first pick up in central Nebraska before spreading east by the later morning hours. Here’s timing of those winds through Tuesday night:

Even though it is April Fools’ Day – there is a very real risk for severe weather across Nebraska Tuesday. Overall though in the most recent updates, the Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk has shrunk down to just southeast Nebraska – from about Lincoln toward Hebron and areas southeast.

A Marginal (Level 1 of 5) risk covers the rest of the state for borderline severe storms that may bring up to 60 mph winds and quarter size hail.

The window for severe weather starts as early as about 5 p.m. Tuesday for central Nebraska, before strong storms move northeast out of Kansas toward southeast Nebraska around 9 p.m. tonight.

Here’s the latest timing from Stormcast on what storm development looks like across the state through the early morning hours of Wednesday:

The risk for tornadoes has increase slightly toward extreme southeast Nebraska – Fairbury to Beatrice and areas east, as an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out completely tonight.

The main concern will be some hail that could be up to 1.5-2″ (particularly across southeast Nebraska tonight).

And damaging wind gusts around 60 mph+ will be another threat possible with storms through the night.

Some light rain showers may linger into early Wednesday morning, but the severe threat drops off after about 1 a.m. Wednesday.
