Cold front delivers more winter-like weather for Wednesday

After reaching 44° before Noon on Tuesday, a cold frontal passage forced temperatures to come crashing down. Winter has returned!

The air behind the cold front is significantly colder, which will allow low temperatures to drop to near 11° on Wednesday morning in Lincoln. Despite mostly clear conditions on Tuesday evening, clouds will increase overnight and into Wednesday morning. We’ll be waking up to mostly cloudy skies in southeast Nebraska on Wednesday.

Tuesday Night Forecast

Although wind speeds overnight and into Wednesday morning won’t be too strong, it will still be enough to provide a wind chill. Wind chill values on Wednesday morning will likely be in the lower single digits, or perhaps below zero in some locations.

Stormcast Wednesday Morning - Wind Chill

Clouds stick around for the majority of the day on Wednesday, along with cold temperatures. Highs will struggle to reach 30° in Lincoln – our forecast high is 28°. Keep in mind that a few light snow showers are possible. Any snow will have to overcome dry air in the low levels of the atmosphere.

Wednesday Forecast

We should note that accumulating snow is possible on Wednesday, but nothing significant. Those who see snow likely aren’t looking at accumulations over 1″. In fact, most probably won’t see anything over 0.5″. Be sure to check in with Meteorologist Brittany Foster starting at 5AM Wednesday on Channel 8 News for any updates.

While temperatures should rebound back into the 40s on Thursday, winter returns yet again for New Year’s Eve. Confidence is growing that we’ll see a decent accumulating snowfall late Friday and into Saturday. Unfortunately, it’s still too early to discuss specifics like accumulations, etc.

Make sure to keep checking back we hone in on the details. Either way, cold air will accompany this storm system, as we may be ringing in the new year with high temperatures in the teens!
