Coldest days of the week are here
The coldest days of the week are here.
We may not warm above freezing at any point today. If we do warm above 32°, it won’t be for long. Already chilly out there this morning, many across southeast Nebraska have had wind chills in the single digits. Bundle up and keep a warm drink handy!
Thursday will be colder, but with less wind. Daytime highs will only be in the upper 20s. Friday will also be around freezing, with enough warm air trying to cut in to worry about ice with our next winter system.
The first precipitation type by later Friday afternoon may start out as freezing rain. The evening commute may easily become hazardous if that is the case.
More warm air will cut in from the south later that night, meaning more of a chance to see a transition to rain as the primary precipitation type across southeast Nebraska overnight into early Saturday.
Up to a few hundredths in ice accumulation will be possible by late Friday night. Extra caution and time will be needed for errands and outings if traveling the second half of Friday around I-80.
Dreaming of a white Christmas?
With recent sights of snow and colder weather, it’s felt a lot more like December lately.
Christmas is just two weeks away! You may be wondering: what are our chances for a festive white Christmas this year?
Based on climate-averaged data, below is the chance to see a white Christmas in any given year. A white Christmas is when there’s at least an inch of snow on the ground Christmas morning.
This year, the chances may be slimmer to see a white Christmas in Nebraska. The precipitation outlook leading up to Christmas is signaling below normal precipitation for our state.
The temperature outlook is also signaling days warmer than normal toward Christmas.
The signal is best for above average temperatures in western Nebraska toward Colorado and Wyoming.
