College World Series day three: Arizona heads home early, Chanticleers one win away from finals

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The first weekend of the 2025 College World Series is behind us, and this year’s group is now down to seven teams.
In the first elimination game of the tournament, Louisville defeated Arizona 8-3.
The Wildcats led the way for almost the entire game, until the Cardinals broke through in the bottom of the 8th. Arizona led 3-1, and Louisville plated six runs on six hits, and two errors made by the Arizona defense.
Thanks to Louisville’s come from behind win, they’ve staved off elimination for at least one more game.
“It’s tough on them, really one bad inning,” said Louisville Head Coach Dan McDonnell when talking about Arizona. “They deserved to be here. They worked their tail off this season.”
Arizona’s Head Coach was taking the blame for the loss.
“Unfortunate, we played as hard as we could we just didn’t play fundamentally sound baseball today,” said Chip Hale. “That’s the frustrating thing as a coach, and an instructor of baseball. It got really ugly in the end there.”
In the Sunday night game, it was all the Chanticleers.
It was a battle of two top-15 teams at Charles Schwab Field. Coastal Carolina vs. Oregon State.
Coastal scored early and fast. Colby Thorndyke drove in three runs in the top of the 1st, with a bases clearing double to right-centerfield.
The Chanticleers never looked back, leading from start to finish, with a final score of 6-2.
Sophomore SP Jacob Morrison pitched lights out. He recorded 7.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, and 7 K’s.
“For us to play like that on this stage, it’s pretty darn remarkable,” said Coastal Carolina Head Coach Kevin Schnall. “These guys were unbelievable tonight.”
With Oregon state’s loss, they’ll now face Louisville for an elimination game Tuesday. If the Beavers want to extend their stay in Omaha, their backs will have to be up against the wall. Head Coach Mitch Canham says that’s what this team is made for.
“The beauty is I trust these guys to go out, and take the path that we’ve chosen to take all year and battle on the other side of the bracket,” said Canham.
Beavers vs. Cardinals is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday.
