Columbus Zoo shocked after a gorilla thought to be male gives birth

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A zoo in Columbus, Ohio, got quite the surprise after a gorilla officials didn’t know was pregnant gave birth.

They previously believed she was a male.  That’s because veterinarians at the zoo where Sully was born took a “hands-off approach” with her care.

Sully was healthy and didn’t need any medical procedures that would have required veterinarians to confirm her gender earlier.

The zoo says it’s hard to determine a gender in younger gorillas because males and females are a similar size until they turn 8.

Workers say the infant appears to be healthy, and they confirmed she’s also a girl.
