Community comes together to clean-up Lincoln neighborhoods after destructive storm
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Neighbors helping out neighbors by picking up leaves, branches and other debris after a round of powerful storms Wednesday night.
One home near the Trendwood neighborhood had a large tree fall, landing inches away from one of the home’s windows.
The woman who lives there said the tree crushed all of the patio furniture and a lawnmower. She thinks it caused around $10,000 in damage.
A family down the street spending the day cleaning up branches in their yard. Logan, 12, said he worked outside for several hours to tidy up their lawn.
“Me and my brother were playing video games downstairs when it sounded like a train was coming through our backyard,” he said. “We looked outside the window and the trees looked like they were about to fall down.”
The howling winds also blew over the family’s backyard fence.
“It was really, like nerve-racking that all of that just happened,” Logan said.
In the Woods Park neighborhood, neighbors picked up brooms and swept up the debris-filled streets.
One neighbor heard a branch fall on a parked car right outside of her home. The vehicle’s windshield was shattered, with pieces of the branch still stuck in it.
“I heard this enormous thump and looked outside and saw this huge branch on top of it and on part of my driveway,” she said. “So much so that I wouldn’t be able to move out if I had to.”
Just two houses down the road, neighbors helping remove a giant branch from a woman’s front yard.
The woman wasn’t home during the storm but when she returned, her neighbors were already in the yard working in the pouring rain.
She said she’s lucky her neighbors were generous enough to look out for her, even when she wasn’t home.
