LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A student-athlete at Concordia University was killed in a crash in western Missouri on Friday, the university confirmed on Monday.

The student killed — 22-year-old Matthew Wing from Seward — was a junior sprinter and jumper on the track and field team at Concordia.

According to the university, three other track athletes were seriously injured in the crash.

The university sent a statement regarding the crash:

“Our Concordia Nebraska family is heartbroken. We ask for your prayers during this time, for our campus and for the families and friends of the young men involved in this accident, that we can all find comfort in God’s love and healing grace.”

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the collision happened on Interstate 49 in Harrisonville, Missouri, just before 10:30 p.m. on Friday.

The four Concordia students were headed north in a 2012 Toyota Prius when a 2018 Ford Explorer traveling south in the northbound lane collided with their vehicle, according to the crash report.

Authorities said the Explorer came to a stop in the median, while the Prius caught fire.

Wing, the driver of the Prius, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other three passengers were taken to the hospital.

The driver of the Explorer — a 30-year-old man from Lee’s Summit — was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
