LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Parks and Recreation staff are conducting a controlled burn at the western end of Pioneers Park on Thursday.

In a press release, the city said about 65 acres would be burned near the bison viewing area from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Pioneers Park Suspension and Prairie Corridor Trail bridges will be closed during that time.

People are asked to avoid the area during the project.

Aaron Druery, Lincoln Parks and Rec’s greenways district supervisor, said the controlled burn helps manage large areas of native plants and grasses, while also reducing wildfire risk and enhancing wildlife habitats.
