The strip of highway 76 heading into the town of Cordova was blackened with skid marks Saturday afternoon as car after car sped one mile to the finish line. It’s the first road race of its kind in eastern Nebraska, and it’s for a good cause–they’re raising money for nearby volunteer fire departments.
"The community has been unbelievable," said Coordinator Todd Grantski. "They love this. I mean, to see these type of cars and the possibilities that this can bring to the community."
Celebrity guests even came to support the cause sponsored by Speedway Motors. The company’s Nascar drivers, Al Unser Jr, and Robby Unser, were there to cheer on drivers, give rides to raffle winners, and race a little themselves.
"You know I’ve won the Indy 500 and now I’m out here in Cordova, Nebraska racing a mile, and believe me, it’s the same intensity, same effort," Al Unser, Jr. said.
They picked this county road because it was only built a few years ago and is still smooth. It was a lucky choice for Jim Woolsey, who lives right off the highway.
"I’m excited, and so are all my friends here," Woolsey said. "They’re excited. And I do think we have the best seat in the house."
Four cars raced Saturday. many of those were running over 150 mph, and at least four of them topped 230 mph.
