Lincoln church brings community together through free outdoor concert series
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A South Lincoln church has taken their community outreach to new heights.
The Southern Heights Presbyterian Church has launched a free concert series for the first time in the church’s decades’ long history.
They’re inviting neighbors to enjoy music, food and fun regardless of if they’re members of the church or not.
It kicked off on Sept. 17 with the Lincoln DJ duo called AfroBaddie; a group comprised of two Midwest female DJs who performed high energy house and RnB sounds.
Concert attendees also enjoyed Mediterranean food from Baba’s food truck parked on site.
Pastor Leanne Masters says, “We invite the community to come listen to some great music, have a great time and enjoy the great environment that we have here.”
The artists are getting behind that mission as well.
Linda Kuku is one half of AfroBaddie and told Channel 8 that events like this help connect their music with people they may not otherwise reach.
“It’s opened my mind to making some new connections here tonight, which really excites me because it just opens the doors from kind of being scared and in my own bubble to now realizing that Lincoln is really open to new sounds and they want to hear different things,” said Kuku.
The next artists to be featured is Miky Semrad and Brian McGovern on Thursday, Sept. 24.
The two musicians are native to Nebraska with a long history of performing a mix of Rockabilly, bluegrass and funk throughout the Midwest.
