Southern Nebraska cornfield fire stops trains as volunteer firefighters, farmers respond
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Several fire departments and farmers battled a cornfield fire that stopped trains on Wednesday.
Adams County Emergency Management said the blaze was reported around 4:30 p.m.
It started near East Seventh Street and North Blaine Avenue before heading for railroad tracks southeast of the intersection.
Officials said the Hastings Rural Volunteer Fire Department, Hastings Fire & Rescue, the Glenvil Volunteer Fire Department, the Trumbull Volunteer Fire Department and Juniata Fire made sure the blaze never crossed the tracks.
The Salvation Army kept everyone hydrated, while the Adams County Sheriff’s Office managed traffic.
