LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Board of Commissioners awarded a Lancaster County Department of Corrections officer for saving a choking inmate last year.
On Tuesday, Correctional officer Tom Shirey received the Commissioners Award of Excellence for his actions in saving a choking inmate back in October of 2021.
A Correctional Seargent nominated Shirey for the award in the category of safety. The award recognizes employees who consistently provide outstanding service and work that demonstrates exemplary personal commitment to Lancaster County.
In October, Shirey observed an inmate in distress during a safety and security check of a housing unit. Shirey saw the man choking and called for additional staff and medical assistance before performing the Heimlich maneuver on the inmate.
Thanks to Shirey’s quick action, he cleared the inmate’s airway and prevented the choking.
“Your life-saving measures had a positive impact on the inmate and the inmate’s family. We are proud of the work you and your fellow correctional officers do every day,” said Deb Schorr, Lancaster County Board Chair.
