Could warmer temps lead to lower energy bills this next month? Officials suggest yes

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — To start the new year in Nebraska, the Cornhusker State is seeing some unusual temperatures.

There have been three record highs since the start of January.

Friday marks 40 days since December 1st, and in that time? We’ve had nearly 30 days with above-average temperatures.

Unusual warmer weather may reduce the need for homeowners to use their heating.

Black Hills Energy says it will trickle down to the dollar, noting that next month’s bills could be slightly different. It’s not clear just how much, but it should be “more affordable.”

“The cost of the commodity itself, there’s the cost of delivering the energy. There’s a variety of factors. Temperature is by far the largest factor when it comes to your energy bill,” said Brandy Johnson, the senior public affairs manager for Black Hills Energy. “Warmer weather today means your bill will be a little bit more affordable than it would be if we had more cold weather like we typically see in Nebraska winters.”

But we all know this warmer weather can’t last forever. Frigid days are most likely ahead.

To save money, Black Hills recommends setting your thermostat to 68 degrees. You can also weather-proof your home.

“Winter in Nebraska will have colder days. You can take some steps today to add weather stripping and make sure your home is ready for those colder days so you can save money when you’ve got to use more energy to stay warm.”

LES also says the warmer weather will definitely affect this month’s bills. But if you operate on gas, it could be more expensive.
