Council Bluffs voters make it to the Iowa caucuses despite frigid cold

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (KLKN) – Voters took initiative to show up to the Iowa caucuses on Monday evening despite cold temperatures and snow-covered roads.
State Sen. Dan Dawson said he was pleasantly surprised by the number of people who showed up to Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs.
“When I first showed up here, about an hour and a half early, we already had people here waiting to get in,” he said. “People, weather or not, were determined to have a say in the 2024 campaign.”

A representative for each presidential candidate was able to speak in front of the crowd to garner support.
Stephen Bader was the captain for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. He said it’s important to have a captain at each caucus, no matter how big or small.
“The last thing they’re going to hear is an impassioned, sincere speech from a DeSantis fan,” he said. “And if you’re a DeSantis fan, you’re doing that in spite of the polls and the media and Twitter and all this kind of stuff. You’re a true believer, and it’ll come across.”

Tom Kaiser, a voter and caucus captain for Nikki Haley, said he wouldn’t be voting for former President Donald Trump because he is too abrasive.
“I’m tired of old men running this country into the ground, being president for their own personal reasons,” he said. “And I think it’s time to have a female in as president of the United States.”

But those captains couldn’t sway enough voters to their side.
Trump ended up receiving 37 of the 68 votes at Abraham Lincoln High School.
In second place was Haley with 15 votes, followed by DeSantis with 10.
One Trump supporter thinks he is the best way forward for the country.
Mary Assmann said Trump “put his money where his mouth is.”
“Made promises, kept promises,” she said. “And we’re hoping that he can do that again. He’s winnable. He can win.”
