Crews battle house fire in southeast Lincoln
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Fire & Rescue battled a house fire Friday evening in southeast Lincoln.
Just before 6:30 p.m., several crews were called to a home near 62nd Street and Old Cheney Road for a confirmed structure fire.
The owner of the home was in Omaha when the fire started and was alerted through their phone.
According to LFR Spokeswoman MJ Lierman, the battalion chief initially reported the fire coming from the basement, but the fire inspector said it started in the kitchen.
Lierman said there is “major” smoke damage throughout the home.
Animal control was called to the scene for a dog and two cats that were in the home during the fire.
A Channel 8 reporter saw one of the cats being loaded into an Animal Control’s cruiser and it appeared to be OK.
But fire fighters were performing life-saving measures on the dog.
LFR said the dog and one of the cats didn’t survive.
Channel 8 is waiting to hear from LFR on what started the fire and how much damage it caused.
This is a developing story. Check back with Channel 8 for updates.
