Damaging wind threat with severe risk for central Nebraska Tuesday evening
Before we talk of the severe threat on Tuesday, it’ll largely be another hot and mostly sunny day.
Temperatures this morning in the upper 60s and lower 70s will quickly warm to the 90s again around and south of I-80.
The humidity today will make it feel a few degrees hotter and muggy.
But the overall risk for severe weather has increased again with the latest update from the Storm Prediction Center.
Now, an Enhanced (Level 3 of 5) risk is in place for friends and family in central Nebraska mainly for a damaging wind threat by later this afternoon and especially the evening hours. Lincoln is within a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk, but the storms really look to weaken on their way into southeast Nebraska late Tuesday night/overnight.
The threat of damaging wind in central Nebraska could be significant. Black hash marks below mean wind gusts could exceed 75 mph in that area.
There will also be an isolated tornado threat as storms move east over northern Nebraska this afternoon and evening. A brief, spin-up type of tornado would be possible with this setup along a cold front.
Hail is also possible, with the slightly higher probability over North Platte and into north-central Nebraska with the early stages of these storms before it becomes mainly a wind threat this evening.
Here’s what the latest version of Stormcast is saying for timing of storms starting up in northwest Nebraska, then crossing into central Nebraska as they move east Tuesday evening.
The model below shows a gust front pushing out ahead of storms by Tuesday night, indicating a weakening trend on their way into southeast Nebraska.
Coverage then becomes more scattered and spotty beyond midnight – 2 a.m. early Wednesday.
Therefore, rain totals will be on the lighter side for many in southeast Nebraska. More rain is expected for areas of central and northern Nebraska.
More rain is possible through the end of the week, with temperatures dropping especially by Thursday (highs in the 70s).
