Dangerous heat continues this week
Despite a slight drop in temperatures on Sunday, the heat dome remains in control this week. That will result in temperatures soaring back into triple-digit territory on Monday. Although some patchy dense fog is possible early Monday, sunshine will dominate for the rest of the day.
The combination of heat and humidity will result in dangerously high feels-like temperatures on Monday. I would not be surprised to see heat index values upwards of 120°. This kind of heat is life-threatening if you do not take proper precautions.
Even by 10 p.m. Monday, there’s a chance we see heat indices in the upper-90s to near 100°. This means we won’t get too many hours of relief from the heat overnight.
The highest heat index values will likely be in the easternmost part of the state. However, heat indices will still be above 100° in central Nebraska around peak heating on Monday afternoon.
While the humidity may drop slightly Tuesday through Thursday, air temperatures will compensate. We still expect near-record or record-breaking temperatures through mid-week, with heat indices easily exceeding 100° each day.
An Excessive Heat Warning is in place for eastern Nebraska through 10 p.m. Wednesday. This is where we expect the most intense heat. A Heat Advisory extends a little farther west. It will still be dangerously hot in these locations, but it won’t feel quite as warm as compared to eastern Nebraska.
The heatwave comes to an end closer to this weekend. Temperatures will drop substantially on Friday, and we expect low to mid-80s for highs over the weekend. As temperatures cool, we will also open the door for a few more rain chances.
