Recap of Day One at Nebraska state wrestling
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The 2023 NSAA State Wrestling Championships are underway in Omaha at the CHI Health Center.
The state tournament started on Thursday and runs through Saturday’s finals, which begin at 3 p.m.
Class A
Lincoln East had a strong showing on Day One and sits at third in Class A heading into the semifinals.
The Spartans sent six of their 13 qualifiers to the semifinals, including Leland Sindel (106 pounds), Scottie Meier (113), Joshua Shaner (126), Gabe Turman (132), Cole Toline (138) and Westin Sherlock (152).
Lincoln Southwest got three wrestlers to the semifinals: Jack Baptista, Hunter Jacobsen and Cooper Jackson.
Lincoln Southeast’s Caleb Durr won by decision to advance.
Class B
Waverly sits at third and Beatrice at eighth heading into semis. The Vikings saw four wrestlers make it to the semis.
Drew Moser won by technical fall over Cole Ovens, Garrett Rine won in the ultimate tiebreaker over Braxton Peacher, Brayden Canoyer won by medical forfeit over Connor Ritonya, and Garrison Brehm won by decision over Garrett Schultz.
Class C
Fillmore Central is second in Class C, with Aiden Hinrichs, Jackson Turner and Markey Hinrichs headed to the semis.
Class D
In Class D, David City Aquinas Catholic sits in first place thanks to semifinalists Grady Romshek, Zander Kavan, Jakob Kavan, Kelby Coufal and Calib Svoboda.
Girls
In the girls action, Lincoln East’s Mileena Notaro won by fall over Gloria Flores to remain undefeated wrestling at 100 pounds.
Wahoo’s Kaylee Ricketts improves to 50-0 on the season, pinning her opponent in less than one minute.
