‘Deeply loved’ sea lion, Chino, dies at Omaha zoo

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium on Monday announced the passing of a 20-year-old California sea lion.

On Saturday, Chino died from an intestinal mesenteric root tension, or twisting of the intestinal tract and support structures.

Despite Chino’s long-standing history of good health, the zoo said his condition arose quickly and he was humanely euthanized.

In a press release on Monday, the zoo said Chino has been a member of the zoo’s sea lion family since 2010.

At 2 years old, Chino was found tangled in a fisherman’s net off the pacific coast.

Unable to be released into his natural environment, Chino was relocated to another zoo before making his way to Omaha.

Chino fathered eight children, with three still living at the zoo: Nova, Elvira and Fluke.

Known for his impressive 600-pound build, the zoo said Chino’s engaging personality and eagerness to demonstrate made him a favorite among visitors.

Chino mastered more than 30 trained behaviors, showcasing the strong connection between him and his trainers.

“There was everything to like and nothing to dislike about Chino,” said Christine DuPre, supervisor of great apes and sea lions at the zoo. “My favorite behavior of Chino’s was when he would retrieve a water bottle and drop it into a recycling bucket, showing guests how easy it is to recycle.”

The zoo expressed how important Chino was, exemplifying their ongoing mission to engage people in conservation efforts.

“Chino was deeply loved by the entire zoo community, and he will be remembered forever,” the zoo said.
