‘Definitely a hot one’: Lincoln events find ways to dodge dangerous heat
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The heat index at one point on Wednesday was as high as 121 degrees at the Lincoln Airport.
Because of this, many outdoor events had to find a way to dodge the heat.
The Summer Concert Series at the Mill in the Telegraph District was able to move the music indoors.
Many gathered within the coffee shop instead, feeling the rhythm of the beat in a way that also beat the heat.
“Once you come out onto the patio for about 10 minutes, you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, no way,’” Mill co-owner Tamara Sloan said. “This is not going to work, so we’re going to have a party inside tonight.”
The band was willing to play outdoors.
“We just said, ‘No, we don’t want you to melt. We don’t want your instruments to melt in your hands,'” Sloan said.
And the Lincoln Police Department’s Marathon Kids event continued as scheduled, meeting for the seventh week in a row to keep kids active.
“We learn about a new topic about running, and then we get to go on a run together,” Officer Eddie Walters said. “Of course, we play a game, but most importantly, we have a lot of popsicles all summer long.”
But this week came with even more sweet treats and less running.
“It’s definitely a hot one, and we realize that,” Walters said. “We’re going to cut back on the running, increase our popsicle consumption, and we’re going to have a lot more fun today, keeping things a bit shorter but still making sure the kids have a fantastic time with the cops.”

Kids in the program took water breaks, got to see police cruisers and sat inside the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office armored vehicle.
The only running they did: chasing cops around to pin them with a sticker.
Despite the heat, many got to choose making memories over canceling the fun.
