Deputies searching for window-shattering vandals in rural Lancaster County

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is on the lookout for vandals shattering vehicle windows near Hickman.

Capt. John Vik said four vandalisms have happened on 68th Street between Hickman and Firth since Aug. 12.  Three of them were reported early Sunday morning.

In each of the reports, the victim was driving when they noticed another vehicle with its brights on.

The victim then signaled to them to turn off their brights.

Vik said that is when an unknown item was thrown at the vehicle, shattering the windshield.

“We’re not sure exactly what the what the item is,” Vik said.  “There’s been a couple of different descriptions.”

One theory is that it’s a water balloon, which could explain why deputies have not found anything.

The vandalism caused just over $2,000 in damage to all four of the vehicles, according to Vik.

Investigators are working to develop a vehicle description and “assembling leads” to find the culprit.

“We know that there’s some people in the community that have been talking about this,” Vik said.  “Certainly, it’s something that’s going on. It’s certainly something that we want to stop.”

Rod Hartig lives in Hickman and said he can’t believe that crime has come to a small town like Hickman.

“I lived in Kansas City a few years back, and this stuff was going on down there,” he said. “And it’s coming on up here now.”

He said it’s worrisome that authorities aren’t sure what object is being thrown at the vehicles.

“Somebody’s going to get hurt pretty seriously if this continues one of these days, I’m afraid,” he said.

Deputies said they will be out in Hickman until they bring the vandals to justice.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
