DIGITAL UPDATE: New app updates and owners

LINCOLN, Neb. (CNN) — This week in the digital world, it’s app galore. From fighting the coronavirus to offering more ways to connect, change is on the horizon for social media users. Here’s your latest for your digital update.
Mobile contact tracing
Protect yourself from the coronavirus with an app! Health officials are turning to cell phones to help with contact tracing.
App users will get pop-up notifications if you were in contact with someone who tested positive.
To get it, Android users need to turn on Bluetooth and download their state’s COVID-19 notification app.
iPhone users already have the system in their settings, if its software is up to date.
App users will have a constantly changing code in their phone that pings nearby phones via Bluetooth.
If a user tests positive for the coronavirus, they will be sent a pin from local health officials to enter into their phone.
Any other users nearby during the previous two weeks will get an alert.
So far, 15 states are partaking in this notification system. Nebraska has yet to opt-in.
Experts say these apps are private and completely anonymous. They do not collect user data or location information.
Slack for sale?
This week, Slack stock shares were up after news of potentially being bought by Salesforce.
The workplace messaging app’s popularity skyrocketed when people began working from home due to the pandemic.
Their stock spiking as much as 28%, market cap growing nearly $21 billion.
Like Slack, Salesforce is a business software company that aims to improve efficiency and collaboration.
Unlike Slack, Salesforce is more revenue-focused.
Neither company has made any public comment concerning the potential acquisition deal.
Snapchat… or Copycat TikTok?
Snapchat unveils a new feature called “Spotlight”, that mirrors a popular TikTok feature.
The media company says it’s “a new entertainment platform for user-generated content within Snapchat.”
“Spotlight” will feature entertaining user-submitted snaps, that will be personalized to an individual’s interests over time.
A twist on TikTok’s “For You Page” users are hesitant to begin engaging with the feature. However, as ownership of TikTok still remains a topic of global interest, “Spotlight” may offer users a more reliable experience.
