Dog killed, firefighter injured in north Lincoln trailer home fire

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Several Lincoln Fire & Rescue crews battled a blaze at two trailer homes Wednesday afternoon.

Crews responded to the fire near First Street and Cornhusker Highway around 1:50 p.m.

When they arrived, two trailer homes were “fully involved,” Battalion Chief Jeremy Gegg said.  Firefighters saw black smoke in the air as they approached the homes.

A dead dog was found inside one of the homes.

A firefighter was also taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The house with the dog was a total loss, with about $55,000 in damage, according to Fire Inspector Jason Relford.

He said the other home, which was vacant, sustained about $7,000 in superficial damage.

The fire was caused an improperly discarded cigarette, LFR said.

Gegg thinks strong winds spread the fire from one trailer home to the other.
