Driver falls asleep on rural Nebraska road, crashes into railroad crossing gate

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Two people suffered minor injuries Sunday in a crash with a railroad crossing gate in rural Merrick County.

The Merrick County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened near Highway 30 and Z Road, just west of Silver Creek.

A Ford Escape was heading south on Z Road when the driver fell asleep and crashed into the railroad crossing gate.

The driver and a passenger had injuries that were not life-threatening, the sheriff’s office said.  They were wearing seat belts.

The Silver Creek Fire and Rescue Department also responded to the scene.
