Drivers concerned after another fatal crash at northeast Lincoln intersection
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln residents are raising concerns over a northeast Lincoln intersection after a fatal crash.
Police said John Ryan, 87, was driving east on Market Drive and crossing 84th Street when he was hit by a northbound vehicle.
He was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Harrison Gubser drives frequently on 84th Street in that area, near Walmart.
He said he now avoids that intersection altogether because turning left from Market Drive is too dangerous.
The speed limit on 84th is 45 mph, but Gubser said many drivers don’t follow that.
“This is kind of a stretch of area that doesn’t exactly have things in the way, so people just like to go 55, 60 in the 45,” he said. “Combine that with the hill there, people can’t exactly see what people are doing.”
And this isn’t the first crash there. In August, a bicyclist was hit and killed by a pickup truck at the intersection.
Some social media users also said 84th and Market is dangerous.
“They really need to put a light there,” Bill Taylor commented on a Channel 8 Facebook post. “I have seen so many close calls.”
The Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department sent a statement about Saturday’s crash.
“Safety is one of the City’s top priorities as we follow national safety traffic standards,” LTU said. “Our team is currently reviewing the crash and operational history of the intersection. This will assist us in evaluating if enhanced traffic control devices are warranted of if driver error impacted this crash.”
