Drug Enforcement Administration seeks to get unused drugs out of homes

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska State Patrol was at Hy-Vee on Saturday for the Drug Enforcement Administration’s semiannual Drug Takeback Day.

Troopers hoped to encourage people to get expired and unused drugs out the home.

Check your medicine cabinet for prescription drugs that you no longer need.

A Nebraska State Patrol investigator said while it may not seem like a big deal, keeping those drugs lying around poses a significant threat.

He said Drug Takeback Day increases safety within the home.

“It takes the medications out of the house that are no longer needed and could possibly end up in the wrong hands,” Investigator John Lukesh said. “A lot of the times we find that if there’s no necessary use for it, why have it around? If it’s no longer medically necessary, then get rid of it.”

If you missed Drug Takeback Day, you can visit Hy-Vee any time of year and use its “safe dispose” box for expired prescriptions.
