Early Fourth of July fireworks prompt 18 calls to Lincoln Police in past week

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Fireworks are setting off some Lincolnites.

You aren’t supposed to be lighting fireworks in the city for another week yet.

But some neighbors are already reporting hearing loud booms at night, disrupting their peace.

“There’s really not anything saying, ‘Let’s be courteous to your neighbors,'” said Lincoln mom Mickenna Shannon.

City ordinance says you can’t light Fourth of July fireworks until July 3, but the bangs and booms are already echoing through neighborhoods.

“It happens every year, so I try to grin and bear it,” Shannon said.

The Lincoln Police Department confirms there’s been 18 fireworks calls within the past week.

“Compassionate people, I would say, talk to their neighbors and like say, ‘Hey do you have PTSD, are you a vet, do you have babies?'” Shannon said. “I think it is important if you’re going to be blowing them off.”

For many, fireworks are tradition.

Shannon said her family isn’t against fireworks but wishes people would be more considerate of when and where they’re setting them off.

The City of Lincoln allows fireworks from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on July 3 and from 8 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on July 4.

“I’m preparing for my baby’s sleep schedule,” Shannon said. “We’re going to probably try and take more naps in the day. I do worry about the night of Fourth of July because even if people don’t do it throughout the week, it seems like Fourth of July night, everyone tries to.”

She said she’s bracing for the late-night pops.

“I actually do like fireworks,” she said. “Obviously when it gets overkill, that’s when it starts to be a little bit like, ‘OK, you don’t have to blow five of them at once.'”
