Earth Day weekend is good time to buy plants at Lincoln garden centers
What and when to plant

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Friday is Earth Day, and planting a tree or cleaning up a pond out in nature are great things to do.
But what can we do right in our own yards to celebrate this day?
“My main thing is trying to get people to get rid of some lawn and put in some flowers, shrubs and trees,” said Jason Orth, shrub and tree supervisor at Campbell’s Nursery. “That way we can kind of help wildlife, birds, pollinating insects and those other beneficial insects.”
Gardening centers around Lincoln are receiving shipments of springtime planting products right now to prepare for their busy season.
Campbell’s staff said most products are from the United States, so supply chain backlogs haven’t impacted gardening centers as badly as other industries.
But there are some products that will be hard to find this year, including magnolias and bigger trees, so Campbell’s stocked up on smaller trees.
“We have a pretty good selection,” Orth said. “The main thing with the supply chain issues is just that we have to order way earlier than we normally would, so we are planning like a year or two years ahead almost.”
Campbell’s staff said the week of May 1 through May 8, Mother’s Day, is typically the best time in our area to plant and get your yard ready for spring and summer.
The nursery is still receiving new products almost daily, so now is the time to browse and find what you like.
