Eggs are scrambling the internet as grocery store prices increase

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – With the recent increase in egg prices and a nationwide egg shortage, many are taking to social media to voice their concerns.

Posts across different platforms are getting millions of views.

Tiana Le, a local TikTok creator, told Channel 8 the recent trend is an interesting way of expressing your opinion.

“I think that just shows the power of TikTok, that you can really create a community around anything,” she said. “And for right now, it’s this egg topic, so a lot of people are coming together, voicing their concerns and their opinions on it and it’s very unique.”

A dozen large grade A eggs hit an average price of $4.95 in January, passing the last increase of $4.82 in 2023.

Le said the recent egg issues are a major head-turner for the whole country, with many creative perspectives.

“I’ve seen mini vlogs about the egg prices,” she said. “Even people making short videos tracking the egg prices. When it comes to social media trends like this, it definitely turns the eyes of everyone on those social media platforms. Whether it be Instagram, TikTok, YouTube to these very specific issues.”

On the Now Local News app, Melanie shared what she saw while shopping for groceries.

“There are some eggs here at Target, but there’s not a lot. And there are lots of empty shelves,” she said.

Dennis also pointed out the price increase at his local store.

“I’m here at Russ’ Market on the 27th of January. They are getting expensive. Better come get ’em while you can,” he said.
