LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Terence “Bud” Crawford is being stripped of his World Boxing Council super-middleweight title, ESPN reported on Wednesday.

The WBC insisted that Crawford, an Omaha native, was stripped for failing to pay their sanctioning fees, according to ESPN.

He won the belt in September after defeating Canelo Alvarez by unanimous decision.  Later that month, a parade was held for Crawford in Omaha to celebrate the win.

In a statement provided to ESPN, the WBC said it sent “multiple communications” to Crawford for not paying his fees for his past two fights against Israil Madrimov and Alvarez.

“Very unfortunately, the WBC did not receive an acknowledgment of receipt nor any response to any of those communications,” the league said in the statement.  “The WBC had no choice but to act.”

Hamzah Sheeraz and Christian Mbilli will now fight for the vacant belt.
