Evacuations underway as emergency crews respond to railcar fire near North Platte
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Several emergency crews responded to a railcar fire between North Platte and Hershey on Thursday.
In a statement, Union Pacific said an explosion happened inside a container at Bailey Yard, which caused several railcars to catch fire.
The fire was contained to a single railcar at around 3:30 p.m., according to Union Pacific.
One of the railcars involved contained perchloric acid, a hazardous material, Union Pacific said.
No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Nebraska State Patrol said anyone located between Front Road and Splinter Road, from Highway 30 to 1 mile north, should evacuate.
Highway 30 is also closed in the area, but Interstate 80 is not affected.
