Evening storms possible on Memorial Day
After a sun-filled Saturday, the clouds returned on Sunday. It was a very warm, windy, and humid day. High temperatures managed to rise into the upper-80s and low-90s across southeast Nebraska.
All indications are pointing towards Lincoln remaining dry on Sunday evening. However, storms are likely well to the northwest of the capital city. The greatest odds of seeing storms are north of the Tri-Cities, closer to Broken Bow, Greeley, Ord, and into northeast Nebraska. Storms are possible in the yellow-shaded area, but stronger activity is more likely in the orange hatched area on Sunday evening and overnight.
Some of the storms may be on the stronger side. Isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out, however, the event transitions more to a damaging wind and hail as we head into the overnight hours. Again, the Sunday evening activity is mainly in northern and central Nebraska.
In Lincoln, we’ll hang onto some clouds for much of the overnight hours. A stray shower cannot be ruled out, but conditions should remain mostly dry for many. Lows on Monday morning should be in the lower-70s in Lincoln.
We’ll see the sun for many hours on Memorial Day. As a result, we’re forecasting partly cloudy skies with a high near 90°. It will be a windy day, with wind gusts out of the south and southwest up to 45-50mph.
MEMORIAL DAY STORMS
By the late afternoon and evening, we are watching the potential for storm development in southeast Nebraska as a cold front approaches. Realistically, anytime after 3 p.m. is fair game for these storms to arrive in Lincoln. Anyone who sees storms has the chance to see some severe weather.
There are a lot of unknowns with Monday’s storm potential. It is possible that the storms develop to the east and miss Lincoln altogether. The timing is also a bit iffy.
This is because Sunday night’s storms will leave a “footprint” in our atmosphere, meaning that how Monday plays out is dictated by what happens on Sunday night. Regardless, storms will be nearby on Monday, so it’s good to be prepared just in case.
Once we get past Sunday night, we’ll have a much better idea of how things will play out on Monday. Make sure to check in with Meteorologist Brittany Foster starting at 5 am on Channel 8 News for the latest.
