Exclusive Interview With Kelsey Peterson

A former Lexington teacher who made national news after having sex with her student spoke exclusively to Good Morning America.

Kelsey peterson was emotional as she spoke from her prison cell.

Just Monday, she was sentenced to 6 years behind bars for fleeing to Mexico to have sex with one of her students Fernando Rodriguez, who was 13 at the time.

26-year-old Kelsey Peterson sits behind bars in an Illinois federal prison, it's expected she'll be there for the next couple of years serving out a 6-year sentence.

“He wasn't just a kid, he was a man, he was like the man in my life and sometimes I think I lowered my age and he raised his and we met somewhere in the middle that's how I sometimes feel about it because I wasn't acting the way I would have normally acted.”

Peterson met the then 12-year-old Fernando Rodriguez back in 2005 when she was his math teacher they started having sex in November of the following year.

“It's not like I chased little boys or liked younger men or anything like that it had nothing to do with that, it was him in general I loved him or I thought I loved him and I thought I needed him he was that drug to me and it spiraled my life so far out of control I couldn't find a way out anymore.”

And while her future is unknown, Peterson says she's now ready to move past this.

“I grew up in this really Christian family, we don't do anything wrong family and that's all I wanted and yet I made choice after choice that didn't allow that and I have to pay those consequences.”

She will get credit for her time already served in jail and it's possible she'll get a year knocked off for good good behavior.

As for Fernando Rodriguez who was an illegal immigrant at the time, he has been granted humanitarian parole and his lawyer is trying to get a visa that would let both him and his parents to become U.S. Citizens.
