Extreme Heat Sunday, Continues Early Next Week
Extreme Heat:
An EXTREME HEAT WARNING (Pink) and HEAT ADVISORY (Orange) are in place for the majority of the state for Sunday, July 27, and Monday, July 28. Above average temperatures and high dew points will force the heat index into the triple digits over the coming days. Heat indices could reach up to 115 degrees in southeast Nebraska.
Monitoring for heat-related illness will be crucial for the upcoming days. The graphic above shows signs and what to do if either yourself or someone you know is experiencing a heat-related illness. Drink plenty of water and limit any unnecessary time outdoors over the next couple of days.
Heat indices in the Capital City will be well above the triple digits for Sunday and Monday.
Forecast:
Temperatures this afternoon will be in the lower, middle, and then upper 90s for Lincoln. Mostly sunny skies today, but oppressive heat will make for a good Sunday to spend indoors.
Highs across southeast Nebraska will be in the middle to upper 90s with a strong breeze out of the south at 10 to 15 miles per hour, gusting to 20.
It will be hard to see much relief during the overnight hours tonight with temperatures falling into the mid-70s for southeast Nebraska, with cooler lows out near the Tri-Cities.
For the Capital City, our low temperature tonight will reach the upper 70s thanks to southerly winds continuing to bring warmer air and moisture. Mostly clear skies on Sunday night before we kick off the next work week.
Monday looks to be the hottest day of the ongoing heat wave with high temperatures in the upper 90s for much of our area. Mostly sunny skies persist with winds out of the south at 5 to 10 miles per hour.
Lincoln will look to crack the 100-degree mark on Monday for just the third time so far in 2025. Mostly sunny skies, a southerly wind, and heat index values near 110 degrees, if not higher.
If it is any consolation, there is a light at the end of the heat wave tunnel. A cold front will move through Tuesday evening and bring what will be some much-needed relief from the heat. Storm chances will be possible with an unsettled weather pattern following the frontal passage, but we will get to enjoy high temperatures in the upper 70s. Temperatures continue to stay below average for the first few days of August.
