Fairbury authorities investigating suspected accidental shooting

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a report of a man accidentally shooting himself.

On Wednesday, the responded to calls of a shooting.

Upon arrival, they found a man sitting on the hood of a vehicle in the backyard of 812 7th Street, in Fairbury.

Authorities say he had a gunshot wound to his right leg.

Police on the scene say he was alert and conscious, and was yelling that someone had shot him.

When asked who, he couldn’t say, and did not know where the reported shooter was.

The man was treated at the scene, and later transported to Jefferson Community Health and Life, that’s where he was interviewed.

During the interview, authorities say they learned that he accidentally shot himself.

The sheriff’s office got a search warrant, and searched the premises.

They found various ammunition, gun parts and controlled substances at the scene.

The man was transferred to a Lincoln hospital for further treatment.

The incident remains under investigation.

No arrests have been made at this time, and the sheriff’s office says there is no ongoing threat to the community.
