Vehicle fire on I-80 near Waverly

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A vehicle went up in flames late Monday night on Interstate 80 near Waverly.

It happened about 10 p.m. on the bridge over U.S. Highway 6, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said a family was traveling east when their Jeep Cherokee started having trouble shifting.

The vehicle then started to get hot, and the family pulled over.

Sgt. Scott Gaston said the Jeep then “burst into flames,” but everyone was able to get out safely.

He said the vehicle was destroyed.

The fire was most likely caused by a mechanical problem, according to the sheriff’s office.
