Farmers affected by floods get a late start to planting

DANNEBROG, Neb. — In central Nebraska, many farmers are still waiting to get into their fields.
A Dannebrog farmer said there are still a couple of weeks between him and his planter.
Between the floods and excessive moisture, Dannebrog farmer Kurt Kroeger said he hasn’t been able to really do much of anything in his fields.
According to Kroeger, his neighbors were able to get in when it started to dry up but they’re not where they normally would be this time of year.
As for the yields, Kroeger said they’ll be down from the last few years.
“Just with the nutrients that got washed out of the fields from the heavy spring rains and the economy the way it is, I just don’t think it’s going to be there this year. I think we could be off as maybe like 20 to 30 percent of what we have been in the past,” said Kroeger.
Kroeger said at this time in past years, they would be in the thick of planting or just wrapping up.
