FDA, CDC investigate hepatitis outbreak in strawberries

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control are investigating an outbreak of Hepatitis A linked to fresh organic strawberries.
Infections have emerged throughout the United States and Canada with the last illness reported on April 30.
Though the affected product is past shelf life, the FDA announced on Saturday that strawberries branded as FreshKampo and HEB purchased between March 5 and April 25 should be thrown away.
Anyone who froze the strawberries to eat at a later date is asked to throw them away.
Products were confirmed to have been sold at the following retailers. The FDA says they could have been sold elsewhere.
- Aldi
- HEB
- Kroger
- Safeway
- Sprouts Farmers Market
- Trader Joe’s
- Walmart
- Weis Markets
- WinCo Foods
If you are unsure of what brand you purchased, when you purchased your strawberries, or where you bought them from prior to freezing them, the strawberries should be thrown away.
The FDA warns that other products may be included in the outbreak and will provide an update as their investigation continues.
