Federal government announces cybersecurity label for smart devices
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Starting next year, when you’re shopping for a smart TV, fitness tracker or other device, you could see a new U.S. government-backed label.
The federal government launched an effort on Tuesday to put labels on gadgets that are less vulnerable to cyberattacks. Officials said it’s to help consumers know what they’re buying.
“We are bringing more and more internet-connected devices into our homes, and we know that Americans are concerned that these internet-connected devices could be used to hack into homes, schools and offices,” said Anne Neuberger, U.S. national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies.
The logo will be applied to products that meet government-established cybersecurity criteria.
Several major manufacturers have made voluntary commitments to increase cybersecurity for the products they sell.
Amazon, Best Buy, Google, LG Electronics USA, Logitech and Samsung are among the industry participants.
“The new shield logo would probably include tech that requires strong passwords and provides regular software updates,” said Josh Planos with the Better Business Bureau of Nebraska.
A wide range of products could be covered, including smart TVs, refrigerators, microwave ovens and — eventually — Wi-Fi routers.
This effort comes as scammers are making millions of dollars from cyberattacks.
“This is a tool; this is not answering the problem,” Planos said. “This is not removing cybercriminals from the equation. This is merely telling a company and telling a consumer that a product is worth your time and worth your investment.”
The BBB reminds people that it is always important to keep things like passwords, credit card information and any personal info protected.
