Serving up pancakes is not how Jay Dean usually spends his Saturdays.
Every other month Dean and his group, Feed the People Lincoln serve pancakes and other breakfast items at Meadowlark Coffee in Lincoln to raise money.
That money helps them buy food, clothes, and hygiene items, which they give away to anyone in need in Lincoln.
"We believe the things that we hand out food, clothes, hygiene products, are inherent rights and that they belong to the worker, they should belong to the workers no matter what," Feed the People founder Jay Dean said.
Feed the People has been operating for several months and is entirely volunteer run.
They operate by accepting donations of food or other items and then turning around and giving them away to others in the community.
"This definitely isn’t charity, its solidarity. They’re just working class people the same way we are. It’s very much just community members helping each other out," Dean said.
The group wants to continue growing so they can help more people throughout the Capitol City.
For Feed the People, the best part of their group is watching the community come together to help one another.
"I just think it’s really inspiring to me that it’s the community supporting itself. There are a lot of people in Lincoln who are struggling, who’ve been struggling for a long time. If we can make it so we have each others backs and help each other out during hard a time, that’s a sign of a healthy community," said Feed the People member Eric Holt.
Their next event will be held July 14th at their location in The Commons on 14th and B.
