Fiesta on the Green gives UNL students a chance to learn about Hispanic culture
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — National Hispanic Heritage Month has many of Lincoln’s organizations paying homage to their Latino neighbors.
It is the same for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, which hosted the annual Fiesta on the Green on Thursday.
Each year, UNL students spend the evening taking in Hispanic culture through various events.
Charlie Foster, assistant vice chancellor for inclusive student excellence, said this event is an opportunity for students to get together to learn.
“I think that being at a college, we all have the opportunity to learn about different parts of the world,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to learn that we won’t necessarily [get] in other spaces.”
The event was filled with traditional food, dancing and music that could be heard blocks away from the student union.
Visitors got the chance to explore booths set up by student registered organizations that celebrate Hispanic culture.
Foster said that the event allowed students to compare what these cultures share and what makes them different from one another.
“We enjoy celebrating these holidays together because it’s an opportunity for us to learn together,” he said.
National Hispanic Heritage Month ends Oct. 15.
