Final day of extreme heat before nice cool down

From start to end, Monday will be a hot one. Temperatures are only expected to bottom out near the middle 70s with very humid conditions that you’ll really already notice this morning.

Day Planner W Heat Index Pivot

For the afternoon hours, the humidity will make each location – especially across southern Nebraska – feel all the more intense.

Model Heat Index

With the dangerous heat expected to last another day, heat alerts continue through Monday evening. For most of southern Nebraska, a Heat Advisory continues to be in effect for heat index values that could be as high as 107°.

An Excessive Heat Warning continues for Lincoln and surrounding areas in pink (below) for heat index values that could be up to 112° today. These areas especially need to be mindful that heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be more likely if having to be outside for extended periods of time.

Heat Alerts Monday

After today, *cue the slide whistle.* A front will come to bring some much-needed relief. Temperatures will drop off by about 15-20 degrees across the state and stay that way for quite some time.

Week Ahead

As you can imagine with cooler air coming to clash with the warmer air already in place, storm chances will be possible Monday into Tuesday. Scattered storms will start up in western Nebraska and try to survive overnight and into Tuesday morning for south-central and southeast Nebraska.

There is a risk of severe weather with these storms, but the better chance of that will be in western Nebraska and east of eastern Nebraska. The main hazard will be damaging wind.

Spc Monday

After Tuesday morning, the chance to see widespread rain looks pretty low. We’ll be in a favorable weather pattern for small chances to continue, but picking up measurable rainfall may be hard to do through the end of the work week.
