Final winner of Lincoln City Council primary decided after last early votes counted

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The final spot in the general election for the Lincoln City Council has been secured.

After about 7,000 early ballots were counted on Friday, Maher Aurang Zeb grew his lead over Elina Newman and advanced from the primary.

He received about 6,600 votes.

Zeb joins incumbents Sandra Washington, Tom Beckius and Bennie Shobe, as well as former Councilman Jerry Shoecraft and Stan Parker, in the general election.

Those five candidates are grouped closely in the unofficial results, separated by only about 4,000 votes.

Washington leads the pack with about 22,400 votes.

In the general election on May 6, the top three candidates will win the at-large seats on the council.
