Financial expert advises parents to prepare teens for summer jobs
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – With school out, a financial expert says parents should give their teens a taste of the real world.
Gusto, a human resources company, reported that teens make up 18% of all summer hires.
Financial planner Gregg Murset said parents need to teach their teens that they can’t just scroll through social media all day.
“It’s time to pop that bubble and say, ‘Listen, this is not real life,'” he said.
To prepare for a real job, Murset said parents should hire their teens to do work around the house for a “paycheck.”
“Now, this is a perfect opportunity,” he said. “Not only to get stuff done around your house, but also to teach them about taxes and the first real paycheck.”
Being transparent with teens can help them build financial responsibility, Murset said.
“They need to know this stuff so that they can understand what it really takes to make it all happen,” he said.
