UPDATE: Portion of West O Street reopened after overnight fire at warehouse

Lincoln Fire & Rescue rotated crews through the night and will continue to have some presence throughout the day to monitor for re-ignition. No injuries reported.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A portion of West O Street near the Lancaster County Jail was closed for several hours Wednesday night into early Thursday morning as firefighters battled a nearby blaze.

When firefighters arrived at Carroll Construction Supply about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, they encountered heavy smoke outside the building, prompting authorities to close part of West O from the Highway 77 interchange to Northwest 48th Street. That area reopened around 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

Several factors made it difficult to control the flames. According to LFR spokeswoman Nancy Crist, crews initially went inside changing operations to a defensive attack due to high heat and instability of the large structure.

The building was difficult to access due to fencing and excess surplus material on the exterior of the building. There were no fire alarms sounding and no sprinkler system in place. There was also high-wrack storage, approximately 20-feet high, containing steel and concrete material in the building.

Lincoln Fire & Rescue rotated crews through the night and will continue to have some presence throughout the day to monitor for re-ignition. No injuries were reported.
